The Shubb Capo company began in California in 1974, when Rick Shubb and Dave Coontz collaborated to design and produce a new fifth string capo for banjo. A compensated banjo bridge was next followed in 1979 by the new Shubb capo which was first exhibited at the Namm show in 1982. A number of products have followed since but as of 2018 the company had sold over six million capos.
